Swedish Massage
Swedish massage is a particularly comprehensive form of massage that is well suited to the needs of the recipient. It is designed to improve circulation, relieve muscle tension and pain, enhance self-awareness and restore balance between body and mind.
It is a Western practice devised around 1800 by Pehr Henrik Ling, a Swedish physiotherapist who successfully combined the principles of Tuina, a traditional Chinese massage, with those of modern European medicine.
The effects of Swedish massage vary depending on the type of technique best suited to the recipient. An experienced practitioner will know how best to tailor the treatment, using slow or fast strokes, and gentle or vigorous movements, as appropriate. In any case, the comprehensive nature of this approach ensures that it has muscle-relaxing, soothing, toning and lymphatic-draining effects.
Swedish massage relieves muscle tension and increases the elasticity of ligaments and tendons, thereby improving joint mobility and posture.
It also reduces recovery times following periods of fatigue, as the stimulation of blood and lymphatic circulation helps to flush out lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic waste products.
Swedish massage:
• helps relieve muscle tension and improves tissue oxygenation
• improves blood and lymphatic circulation
• has a toning effect: helps prevent fat deposits and cellulite
• acts on the nervous system: reduces stress, anxiety and insomnia
• strengthens the immune system
• increases body awareness
The Swedish massage is performed using massage oil, which can be enhanced with essential oils of your choice.
It is a total body massage, but can be tailored to a specific area depending on the client’s needs.
