Ayurvedic Abhyangam massage

The term ‘Ayurveda’ means ‘the science of long life’: “Ayu” means longevity and ‘Veda’ means science. The Ayurvedic Abhyangam massage is one of the simplest methods. It is based on the rebalancing stimulation of the body’s energy centres and circuits. It is a gentle massage that promotes the circulation of blood and vital fluids to keep the body and mind healthy.

Originating in India some 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda has its roots in the Vedas, ancient books of wisdom which certain Indian sages (the Rishis) are said to have received as a gift from the deity Brahma to cure illnesses and promote well-being.

In Ayurveda, illness is understood as an imbalance in the energy that regulates the body. It holds that the body’s internal environment constantly reacts to the external environment and emphasises the benefit of being aware of the connections between the body, its energies on different levels, and what we consume.

It is a highly sophisticated healing system. It focuses on determining an individual’s constitution, known as a dosha, which may be Vata, Pitta or Kapha, or a combination of these. The doshas, in turn, are formed from a combination of the five elements. Each constitution is associated with specific guidelines regarding suitable diet and the mineral, plant and animal remedies deemed most appropriate. The combinations are endless.

The Ayurvedic Abhyangam massage:
• promotes relaxation, relieves muscle tension and joint pain
• stimulates the metabolism and strengthens the immune system
• improves blood and lymphatic circulation
• facilitates fluid drainage and the elimination of toxins
• promotes faster physical recovery
• helps reduce stress, tiredness and mental fatigue

The Ayurvedic Abhyangam massage is performed using massage oil, which may be enhanced with the properties of essential oils.
It is a total body massage, which can be adapted to focus on specific areas according to the client’s needs.
