Foot Reflexology
“The Principle of Correspondence” by Hermes Trismegistus, from *The Kybalion*
“As above, so below; as below, so above.
As within, so without; as without, so within.
As in the great, so in the small; as in the small, so in the great.”
Thus, through the foot, I observe the human being in all their complexity and, to the best of my ability, guide the person towards being mindful and proactive in life through the stimulation of rebalancing.
A brief history: as early as 5000 BC, acupressure was used in China and India to influence the body’s energy fields. On the walls of the Medici tomb at Saqqara (Egypt, circa 2330 BC), there is a painting depicting a scene of foot and hand massage. The practice was later introduced to the West by the Greek physician Hippocrates. From the Renaissance to the present day, countless studies have been carried out by scholars and scientists from all over the world.
Reflexology techniques can be divided into two main categories: Chinese reflexology, based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Western reflexology, which draws on the scientific principles of early Western neurological discoveries.
There appears to be a specific relationship between the nerve endings in the reflex zones and the location of the physical ailment. Pressure applied to the reflex zone sends a signal to the brain to restore balance by mobilising all available resources. The extremities of the body are particularly rich in nerve endings, which is why stimulating them proves to be quite effective.
Foot reflexology is known to some as ‘the one that hurts’. My approach, using breathing, respects each person’s pain threshold and the pace at which they release tension.
Foot reflexology, combined with the four elements:
• stimulates the nervous system
• rebalances the endocrine system
• stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers
• supports the lymphatic and circulatory systems
• has an anti-inflammatory effect
• revitalises the body’s energy
• promotes relaxation and calms the mind
• helps to manage emotions
